6.1 The Greatest Treasure

Today we conclude the first stage of a five-week journey in which we have sought to learn how to pray prayers that go beyond ourselves; prayers in alignment with God’s big purposes; Kingdom prayers.

It all started when I realized that I had missed the heart of the Lord ’s Prayer. I thought the heart of the prayer was about meeting our needs (give us our daily bread, forgive us our trespasses… deliver us from evil, etc.). But one day I realized that the heart of the prayer is about God and His plan; the heart of the Lord’s prayer is, “Your Kingdom come.”

I learned that the coming of the Kingdom of God is not just a future event when Jesus comes again, but it is also a present event. After all, Jesus said the Kingdom of God is here! But in order to pray, “Your Kingdom come,” I had to answer the question, “What is the Kingdom?” I settled on this definition: “The Kingdom of God is the reign and rule of God in the hearts of His children.” To learn more, I studied Jesus’ parables about the Kingdom, knowing that I could find clues to Kingdom prayer in these parables.

So for the past five weeks we have studied Jesus’ parables about soils, growth, seeds, and weeds. Each parable has helped us unlock clues to better pray about God’s reign and rule in our hearts.

The parable of the treasure in the field

Today’s parable is very simple, yet very profound. Matthew 13:44 "The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

Here is a man who finds a great treasure – and he realizes that this treasure is greater than anything he has ever owned or will ever own. He goes away, sells all that he has in order to buy that field.

It isn’t like a small treasure chest; it’s like a goldmine that runs through the entire field. It’s like an underground oil reserve that will serve as a lifetime supply.

A real-life treasure story…

For quite a few years, I’ve been fascinated by the story of the Steamboat Arabia which sank in the muddy waters of the Missouri river on August 30, 1856.
The steamboat Arabia, was actually smaller than many steamers of the day. It was capable of carrying 222 tons of cargo. It 171 feet long, 45 feet high, and was used to transport food and household goods up and down the Ohio, Mississippi and Missouri rivers. On that fateful day in August, the Arabia stopped in the city of Kansas (now known as Kansas City, Mo.) and then headed north. About one hour north of Kansas City, the boat struck the trunk of a submerged walnut tree. It pierced the hull of the boat and it quickly sank. Everybody on board was able to make it to safety, but the 222 tons of cargo sank down into a watery grave.
A decade later, Elisha Sorter, a man interested in the story of the Arabia, sold his possessions in order to buy the field in which this treasure was buried. For more than a century, his family owned the property, and they often told and retold stories of the sunken ship, never realizing they would ever see it.

Several expeditions over the years were attempted to find the sunken treasure to no avail. The Missouri river, like all fast-moving rivers, gradually changes its path over time. By the late 1800’s nobody really had any idea where the banks of the Missouri river had been located in 1856 when the Arabia sank.

But in 1987, four men, Bob, David and Greg Hawley, and John Mackey sought to recover the remains of the steamboat Arabia. Through intense study of old surveying maps and though perseverance, they located Elisha Sorter’s field. They swung a deal with the Sorter family – and this treasure would become the life-focus of the Hawley family.

Finally in November of 1988, eighteen months after beginning their search, using very sophisticated imaging technology, they found the steamboat. It was ½ mile away from the current banks of the Missouri river, and 45 feet underground, directly situated beneath a grove of weeping willow trees.

They began a lengthy process of unearthing the boat. Still in the path of an underground flow of water, they had to dig 20 wells which pumped water out of the hole and diverted it back to the river a half-mile away. These pumps, running twenty-four hours a day, pumping 20,000 gallons of water per minute, allowed the treasure hunters to continue the dig.

After nearly three weeks of digging, they finally struck the splintered remains of the top of the left paddle-wheel. As they continued to dig, they found a treasure beyond their wildest imagination. The Steamship Arabia had over 200 tons of merchandise in hundreds of sealed barrels and crates. It was the equivalent of a floating general store from 1856. Every crate was different. Filled to the brim with food and household goods from the 1850’s. They contained cases of eye glasses; ink wells; food bottles; medicines; spoons; bells; wrenches; guns; pocket knives; no two cases seemed to be exactly alike, all holding remains of the frontier era.
Working in shifts both day and night, the recovery continued for four months until the entire cargo of the Arabia was removed. After removing the cargo, heavy equipment hoisted the 25,000 pound boiler, paddle wheel structures, and finally the stern portion of the boat itself.

Since 1988, when the Arabia was unearthed, they have been doing a daily process of cleaning, cataloguing, and preserving cargo. In 20 years time, only one-third of the immense treasure has yet been restored.

From the time they began searching, Greg Hawley spent his life preserving, cleaning and cataloguing this treasure. The treasure literally redefined his life. He co-founded the Arabia museum in Kansas City and worked there for the rest of his life.

Previously, there was no known method for preserving wood and treasure that has spent a century under water. Greg Hawley created an amazing yet very tedious system for doing just that.

The men found an incredible treasure in the field worth investing their entire lives. Greg Hawley spent every day at the museum, and delighted in showing up in the middle of tours to tell real-life stories of the treasure of the steamboat.

Reflect on the parable…

The treasure found in knowing Jesus Christ is greater far than this amazing earthly treasure of the steamboat Arabia. Jesus offers eternal life and a home in heaven. He offers an abundant life now for all who will believe in Him. And He offers a purpose for your life today.

Like the man in the parable, the person who finds life in Jesus, has found a treasure greater than any earthly treasure. It is worth selling everything to attain it.

What does it cost?

The man in the parable sells all that he has to buy the field containing the treasure. But here’s the amazing thing – Jesus paid the price of His life to give us the hope of eternity with Him. He willingly went to the cross and was crucified. He made the payment that your sins and rebellion against God deserved.

The man in the parable gave all he had to own the field. Jesus gave His all so we can receive the treasure. You must give your life to Jesus in order to receive the treasure of knowing Him.

Like the man in the field, and like the co-founder of the Arabia museum, finding treasure of great worth is a life-changing adventure.

Once you give your life to Jesus, He begins to use you in ways you may have never imagined. He created you to have a relationship with Him and to make a difference in the lives of people here on earth. Once you’ve trusted and followed Him, once you’ve begun to unlock the treasure of knowing Jesus, He begins to use you in doing the things for which you were created.

The rest of the story…

In January I received a telephone call from my mother. She told me that Greg Hawley was tragically killed in an automobile accident on I-70 a busy interstate on the way home from the Museum.

In the midst of rush-hour traffic, two teens, in cars loaded with friends, were racing, weaving in and out of traffic at speeds in excess of 70 mph. A semi truck swerved to miss them, causing Greg Hawley’s pickup truck to careen off the road and roll over many times.

He was thrown from the car. A man who witnessed the accident, jumped out of his car and rushed over to Greg. He held Greg’s hand, and prayed with and for him as Greg passed away from his injuries.

What’s the point?

I tell this story not to scare you, but to emphasize the reality of the brevity of life. We never know how much time we have left. Greg Hawley spent his life working with the treasure he found in the field. His treasure was physical. When he died, he left that treasure behind.

If you seek Jesus Christ as Lord, you have the privilege of spending every day growing in your relationship with him, and making a difference in the lives of others.

Seek the Lord

He is a treasure worth seeking. He is a treasure worth giving your all. Have you done that? Have you trusted in Him and Him alone?

Prayer prompts and discussion starters:
  • Thank the Lord for giving the hope of heaven to all who truly trust in Him.
  • Thank the Lord for giving purpose in life to all who truly trust in Him.
  • Pray that those who have never really trusted in Him will see the beauty of the treasure of Christ – and will be drawn to follow Him.
  • Pray for a love for those who have not yet found the treasure - Jesus Christ.
  • Pray for people groups who have never heard the name of Jesus that they will have the opportunity to know Him.
  • Pray for missionaries who have given their all to follow Jesus, that the Lord will give them great joy and effectiveness in serving Him.
  • Pray that those who already believe will never become tired of the treasure of knowing Jesus. Pray that they will continue to grow de eper in love with the Lord every day.
  • Is there anything holding you back from fully following Jesus? If yes, what would you need to happen in order to fully give yourself to Him?
  • Pray for the strength and passion to point people to Jesus daily.
  • Thank the Lord for growth in Kingdom prayer. Ask Him to help you continue to grow as a person who prays fervently, “Your Kingdom come.”

5.7 The Dawn of Hope

Matthew 13:43 "Then THE RIGHTEOUS WILL SHINE FORTH AS THE SUN in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear."

The day after Jesus died on the cross, the disciples hid in fear. They were confused, frightened, weary, and numb. The tomb contained the lifeless body of the Savior. It might as well have held the dreams of the disciples as well.
They had no idea that the next morning, God would bring about the most amazing miracle in the history of the world. Hope was about to dawn with the resurrection of Jesus.

And it’s not just a story. On the third day, Jesus Christ arose from the dead. The grave could not hold Him. He burst forth into light and life – defeating death forever. He gave hope to anyone who would put their trust in Him.

The ultimate conclusion.

Our parable today gives the incredible conclusion – that all who trust in Jesus will shine forth with Him in the Kingdom of God our Father.

There we will see Him as He is. We will enjoy a relationship with God and fully experience His love.

This is how the game of life ends – those who trust in Jesus will shine with Him as the sun – those who do not trust in Him will be forever separated.

He who has ears, let him hear.

Jesus ends this parable with an important command – He who has ears, let him hear. In other words, pay attention to the truths contained in this parable.

Take time to listen to these truths and examine yourself to be certain you are in the faith. Don’t just assume – but as Paul reminds the church – examine yourself.
Pray, pray, pray, and then pray

With so much at stake – we must be willing to step out of the comfort zone and plant seeds of faith. We know the Lord is the one who gives life and causes the growth – we plant the seed. And we should do so with a sense of urgency. Pray toward this end, praying that the Lord opens opportunities and uses you in the work of His Kingdom field.

Prayer prompts and discussion starters:
  • Thank the Lord for giving the hope of heaven to all who truly trust in Him.
  • Examine yourself – listen to the truths in this parable and ask the Lord to show you your true standing with Him.
  • Anticipate the day of harvest – when God will gather His own to be with Him. Pray to be fully hoping in Christ on that great day.
  • Pray for those who have never really trusted in Him – that they will trust.
  • Pray for an attitude of boldness from the Lord to share truth with those who don’t know it.
  • Pray for the strength and passion to point people to Jesus daily.

5.6 The Sobering Truth

Matthew 13:40 "So just as the tares are gathered up and burned with fire, so shall it be at the end of the age. 41 "The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, 42 and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

This is a sobering passage of Scripture. Jesus says that at the end, those who have never entrusted their souls to Him will be gathered and thrown into the furnace of fire. He warns of hell where the fire is unquenchable and the weeping and gnashing of teeth is endless.

Today is Good Friday – the remembrance of the day when Jesus was crucified on the cross. It was there Jesus paid the penalty for your sin and mine. The punishment that we deserved fell upon Him. He was crushed for our transgressions.

That day, on the cross, Jesus the Savoir suffered the agony of hell for you and for me. And He did it so we wouldn’t have to endure everlasting torment.

He did it because He loves us. Did you know He loves you? Have you entrusted Him with your life? If you have not – I implore you to trust Him today.

If you have trusted Him, please realize the urgency of reaching out to others. Time is short. Make your time count for eternity.

Prayer prompts and discussion starters:
  • Pray thanking God for Jesus’ death on the cross for you.Pray for a compelling love for the lost.
  • Pray for a sense of urgency to proclaim the truth to those who don’t know it.
  • Pray to be daily impacted by the reality of hell.
  • Pray for people groups who have never heard the name of Jesus, that they will hear of Jesus and rejoice in Him.
  • Pray for someone you know who has been hardened to the message of Jesus. Pray that God will soften his/her heart.
  • Pray for a deep love for this person. Pray that you can communicate the love of Jesus to him/her.

5.5 Let the Lord be the Judge

Matthew 13:28 The slaves said to him, "Do you want us, then, to go and gather them up?' 29 "But he said, "No; for while you are gathering up the tares, you may uproot the wheat with them.

It is amazing to see how patient the Lord is, and how loving towards His children. When the slaves asked if they should gather up the tares, His response was no. Why? Because the Lord didn’t want to lose any of His own in the process.

The Lord is patient, not willing that any should perish. He is also the one who will judge. Too often, I fear, we try to do His job. We try to convict others sin, or judge that others are not truly His. we try to round ‘em up and move ‘em out. Let the Lord be the Judge – that’s His job, not ours.

Our job is to be faithful to Him, to encourage growth in others, to sow seed, to love those who don’t know the Lord, and to long for heaven and point others there.

Prayer prompts and discussion starters:

  • Ask God to give you patience to wait for Him.
  • Plead for a heart of mercy rather than one of judgment.
  • Ask God to give you a heart for those that don’t know Him.
  • Thank God for His tremendous patience towards you. Ask for the same heart towards others.

5.4 Encourage Growth in Others

Matthew 13:26 “But when the wheat sprouted and bore grain, then the tares became evident also.”

When I was in first grade, we did an experiment with mice. We fed healthy food to one group and fed others a diet of candy and soda. Over time, the mice with the sugar diet stopped growing and became weak. At that point, we began to feed them a healthy diet, and over time they regained their health and strength.
Sometimes a lack of growth in fellow believers is due to a poor spiritual diet rather than a lack of spiritual life.

As members of the body of Christ, we must encourage each other to grow. We must encourage each other to seek God’s Kingdom and His righteousness. Are there things in your life that stunt your spiritual growth? What are they? What about in the life of your church? How about the culture in which you live?

Prayer prompts and discussion starters:
  • Ask the Lord to use you to encourage other believers to grow.
  • Ask God to strengthen relationships within the body of Christ so true discipleship will take place among His children.
  • A missionary to Africa has asked prayer for the roots of believers in that continent to grow deep. Pray for believers worldwide to grow in spiritual maturity.
  • Do you have a relationship with a believer who is spiritually more mature than you? Pray for one from whom you can learn.
  • Do you have a relationship with a believer who is younger in the faith, or less mature than you? Seek one out to help them grow.
  • Pray for believers to grow in love for each other – to be growth encouragers.

5.3 Examine Yourself

Matthew 13:26But when the wheat sprouted and bore grain, then the tares became evident also.”

From the time they sprout, wheat and tares look very similar. In fact, it is only as they begin to mature that the differences become evident.

So too, it is possible to look like a Christian, but to actually be a counterfeit. Every church has members who look the part, but inwardly don’t trust fully in Jesus as their only hope.

Paul told the members of the church at Corinth, “Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves!”

Examine yourself. Are you trusting fully and solely in Jesus Christ for salvation? Ask the Holy Spirit to illumine you on this. If you are not fully trusting, it’s not too late to give it all to Jesus.

Prayer prompts and discussion starters:
  • Plead with the Lord to fully reign and rule in your heart.
  • Ask Him to show you any areas where you have not been willing to fully trust and follow Him. Repent of these things.
  • Ask the Lord to cause His church to grow in maturity, so real fruit will be evident.
  • Ask Him to bring about a great revival in your heart, in your church, and in the church worldwide.
  • Ask the Lord to help you grow in the wisdom and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • Ask Him to do works of transformation that only He can do.

5.2 Keep Watch

Matthew 13:24 “… a man… sowed good seed in his field. 25 “But while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went away.”

The enemy knows he cannot defeat the Lord, but it doesn’t stop him from wreaking havoc in God’s field. Sadly, it is while God’s people are sleeping that the enemy sows tares. The Lord calls us to keep watch, to be diligent.

It was in the garden of Gethsemane that Jesus prayed in agony. When He returned to the disciples, He didn’t find them praying – He found them sleeping. “Could you not keep watch with me for one hour?” He asked them. “Then pray that you do not enter into temptation.”

We are making great progress in praying Kingdom prayers. This doesn’t sit well with the enemy. It is now that we must keep watch in prayer.

Prayer points and discussion starters:
  • Pray for God’s people to remain alert to the schemes of the enemy.
  • Pray particularly for pastors to diligently guard the field God has entrusted to them.
  • Pray that God’s workers remain focused on the most important things – that they will not put down their guard.
  • Pray that God’s workers will not grow weary in well-doing. Pray that they will continue to be refreshed by a vibrant relationship with the Lord. Lift the arms of pastors and ask the Lord to refresh them.
  • Pray for the Lord to be glorified and magnified.

5.1 The Necessity of Kingdom Prayer

For several weeks we have investigated Jesus’ command to pray, “Your Kingdom come.” We have looked at the necessity of praying daily for the reign and rule of God to be evident in our hearts and the hearts of all His children.

This week we will shift our focus and look at the end of the story. Our parable this week is a picture of the ultimate coming of the Kingdom. It is the picture of what will happen when God judges all the inhabitants of planet earth.

This parable, in giving us a glimpse of the end, is invaluable in helping us put priorities in perspective. I am convinced that many of the things that take up my time daily are not really all that important in the grand scheme of things. By focusing on the most significant priorities in life, we can spur each other on to greater, nobler pursuits, and we can be involved in seeking God’s Kingdom on the grandest scale.

The parable of the wheat and the tares

Read the parable of the wheat and the tares. Read it several times and ask the Lord to open your eyes to the truth as you read it. Jesus began by telling the parable to the crowd:

Matthew 13:24 Jesus presented another parable to them, saying, "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 "But while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went away. 26 "But when the wheat sprouted and bore grain, then the tares became evident also. 27 "The slaves of the landowner came and said to him, "Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?'

Matthew 13:28 The slaves said to him, "Do you want us, then, to go and gather them up?' 29 "But he said, "No; for while you are gathering up the tares, you may uproot the wheat with them.

Matthew 13:30 "Allow both to grow together until the harvest; and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, "First gather up the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them up; but gather the wheat into my barn.""'

This parable, like the parable of the soils before it, Jesus later explained to His disciples in detail. Read the explanation of the story and pray for specific ways to apply it to your life and the life of your community of faith.

Matthew 13:36 Then He left the crowds and went into the house. And His disciples came to Him and said, "Explain to us the parable of the tares of the field." 37 And He said, "The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man, 38 and the field is the world; and as for the good seed, these are the sons of the kingdom; and the tares are the sons of the evil one; 39 and the enemy who sowed them is the devil, and the harvest is the end of the age; and the reapers are angels. 40 "So just as the tares are gathered up and burned with fire, so shall it be at the end of the age. 41 "The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, 42 and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 "Then THE RIGHTEOUS WILL SHINE FORTH AS THE SUN in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.

A call to prayer…

As we come into Holy Week, I ask you to commit to fervent Kingdom Prayer this week. I encourage you to get together with other believers in several venues this week for the purpose of prayer.

God is meeting with us as we pray Kingdom Prayers. He is causing us to think and pray bigger prayers as we unpack the parables of the Kingdom. Join us for prayer. Don’t hesitate, don’t delay.

Prayer Bullets:

  • Ask God to give you direction as you pray. Listen to Him.
  • As a disciple, ask Him to help you understand the parables for this week, and ask Him to help you make specific application in prayer.
  • Ask God to show you new things to pray – things to pray as a result of this parable.
  • Ask God to lift up your eyes to see the things He wants you to see.
  • Ask Him to give you a heart for those that don’t know Him.
  • Ask Him to show you how to pray for those that don’t yet have the privilege of knowing Him.
  • Ask Him to give you a passion to pray with His children about the things of the Kingdom.

4.7 Mustard and Yeast

This week we’ve looked intently at two parables of God’s Kingdom.

Notice the similarities.

Both of these parables show us that God’s Kingdom starts small and grows to immense proportions.

The mustard seed is tiny but full of life. When planted in soil, it grows steadily and gradually and ultimately becomes a blessing to those around it.
Likewise, a little bit of leaven when worked into the dough steadily causes the entirety of the dough to be changed.

The Kingdom of God is like leaven and mustard seeds. It is full of life. It changes radically as it grows and becomes a huge blessing to everyone it touches.

Notice the differences.

One parable speaks of a seed which can be seen. Once planted, it becomes a plant and grows – becoming fruitful and a blessing to others. It’s like a picture of the church, growing and impacting the world. So when I pray about the Kingdom from a mustard seed perspective, I pray for the growth and strength of God’s people in the world. The parable of the leaven speaks of a life-force that causes changes from the inside out. It’s like a picture of the heart which is changed by God Himself. So when I pray about leaven, I ask the Lord to make changes from within; changes in the heart. As my heart is changed, or the hearts of His children are changed, or the hearts of unbelievers are changed, then actions change.

Prayer prompts and discussion starters:
  • Mustard seed: Pray for the work of God’s people in the world. Plead with God to use us to love others.
  • Mustard seed: Ask Him to give us a passion for holiness and a love for the lost.
  • Leaven: Ask God to renew your heart and make it fully His.
  • Leaven: Plead with God to knead His grace and mercy into the church, that we will be transformed by His love.
  • Leaven: Plead with God to knead His grace and mercy into the hearts of people you know that don’t know Him. Ask Him to bring them to life and transform them from within.

4.6 Complete Transformation

Again, let’s look at the parable of the leaven. Matthew 13:33 He spoke another parable to them, "The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three pecks of flour until it was all leavened."

Jesus explained that God’s Kingdom is like leaven. By itself, leaven is inert. But when added to flour, it comes to life.

The woman kneaded the leaven into three large batches of flour, and in so doing, started a chain reaction that would completely transform the dough.

Leaven actually changes the nature of the dough. It affects every part. It permeates the dough and brings it all to life.

Jesus used the analogy of leaven to illustrate both good and evil – because leaven radically changes the nature of the dough. So when God kneads His grace into our hearts and the hearts of His children, our whole being is affected. On the other hand, if we allow sin to run rampant in our lives, it affects our whole being as well.

Even a young child can look at a batch of leavened and a batch of unleavened dough and tell which one has leaven. So too, people can look at our lives and see whether we’ve been transformed by the reign and rule of God in our hearts, or whether we’ve resisted and remain unchanged.

Prayer prompts and discussion starters:

  • Ask the Lord to do a continual work of transformation in your heart and life.
Ask the Lord to make you sensitive to the work of the Holy Spirit in transforming your life.
  • Ask Him to transform your community of faith by His life-changing power.
  • Pray that others will see God’s children and be drawn to the transforming power of love they see in His children.
  • Ask the Lord to give you a passion for those who have not yet been transformed by His grace and love.
  • Plead with the Lord to make you aware of those who need His transforming power.

4.5 Hiding Leaven in the Flour

In our second parable, Jesus said, "The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three pecks of flour… "

Bad biscuits, good biscuits

Several years ago, I divided the youth into two groups and asked each group to follow written instructions to make biscuits.

The first group, mixed the ingredients into dough, formed the biscuits and then sprinkled baking powder (a type of leaven) on top of them.

The second group mixed the ingredients into dough and then mixed baking power into the dough by kneading it thoroughly.

The first group was disappointed to see that their biscuits never rose. We used them later in the year as hockey pucks. The second group had wonderful biscuits to share with the whole group.

The point? The leaven had to be kneaded into the dough for it to be effective.
Here, in this parable, the woman has taken leaven and kneaded it into three large batches of flour. When leaven is mixed into the dough, the life in the yeast causes all the dough to rise.

Prayer prompts and discussion starters:
  • Ask God to deeply knead His grace into your heart.
  • Plead with Him to make your heart pliable and receptive to the work of His hands.
  • Pray for more grace. Ask Him to make pliable the hearts of all His children.
  • Ask Him to soften your heart to the plight of those who don’t know Him.
  • Ask Him to prepare the hearts of those who don’t know Him.

4.4 Becoming a Haven of Life and Rest

Matthew 13:32 and this is smaller than all other seeds, but when it is full grown, it is larger than the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that THE BIRDS OF THE AIR come and NEST IN ITS BRANCHES."
Mustard trees, especially when they are full of ripened seed are a sight to behold. They are full of birds who flock to these trees to partake of the vigorous tangy seeds (from which we get mustard) and to rest in the branches of the tree.
The once tiny seed has become a life-giving plant; a tree that gives shade to the weary, and sustenance and shelter to the birds. That’s quite a transformation from a mustard seed.

At the end of this verse, Jesus is actually quoting from Ezekiel 17:22 where the Lord describes a small bough from the branch of a cedar becoming a large tree that provides a resting place for the birds of the air. The context of that passage is that God will use His people to be a great blessing to the nations.

God’s Kingdom is like this - starting small, but becoming a great blessing to the nations.

Prayer prompts and discussion starters:
  • Pray that seeds of faith will continue to grow and produce fruit.
  • Ask God to bring about His kingdom in such a way that people will see your faith as vibrant and growing and that they will be impacted greatly and desire to know Him.
  • Ask God to bring His Kingdom to all nations.
  • Pray specifically for people groups who have never known the Lord, that they will find nourishment for their souls and rest in Him.
  • Pray that as the nations come to us, we will have a winsome testimony that will draw them to know more about our wonderful Lord.
